Traditional Disposable Plastics: The Silent Killers of Our Blue Globe - Time to Refuse!

Home    Traditional Disposable Plastics: The Silent Killers of Our Blue Globe - Time to Refuse!

In today's world, the widespread use of disposable plastic products, like a double-edged sword, brings short-term convenience to our lives at the same time, but has caused inestimable, lasting and far-reaching pollution and damage to the environment. Therefore, we are gradually abandoning traditional plastic products, such as the use of plastic straws to promote paper straws, from supermarket plastic bags to environmentally friendly bags.
But every now and then, we also see shocking scenes in news reports:
What was once a picturesque and peaceful beach is now a graveyard of plastic waste. A large number of disposable plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic tableware, etc. were mercilessly washed ashore by the waves, piling up. They gradually break up in the sun, turn into small plastic particles, mixed into the sand, not only let the original charming beach lost the charm of the past, but also pose a serious threat to the Marine ecosystem.

According to relevant studies, these plastic particles will be swallowed by Marine life as food, which will cause their digestive system to be blocked, unable to eat normally, and eventually painful death. Some seabirds, their stomachs filled with plastic waste, die of starvation and organ failure; Tangled in discarded plastic fishing nets, deformed and limited in movement, the turtles struggle in desperation to survive. These innocent Marine creatures are suffering from the disaster of human overuse of disposable plastic products.

Plastic pollution in the ocean continues to spread. These "death zones" composed of various single-use plastic waste are like a malignant tumor, constantly eroding the source of life on the blue planet. In the process of floating in the ocean, plastic waste will absorb a large number of toxic and harmful substances, such as heavy metals mercury, cadmium, etc. These toxins continue to enrich with the transmission of the food chain, and eventually may appear on the human table, seriously endangering human health.

On land, the pollution of disposable plastic products is also not to be underestimated. In landfills on the outskirts of cities, single-use plastic waste accounts for a considerable proportion. Due to the extremely slow degradation rate of plastics, it often takes hundreds of years or even thousands of years to completely decompose, they occupy a lot of valuable land resources in the landfill, and with the erosion of rain, the harmful substances will penetrate into the soil, resulting in a decline in soil fertility, crop production, and even pollution of groundwater, affecting the drinking water safety of surrounding residents.

More worryingly, plastic pollution has reached deep into the Earth's polar regions. In the distant Arctic and Antarctic, scientists have also found a large number of single-use plastic traces. These are some of the purest and most pristine environments on Earth, and they are not immune today. Polar animals, such as polar bears and penguins, are also at risk of being damaged by plastic waste. They can become entangled in discarded plastic fishing gear or ingest plastic waste, putting their lives in serious danger.

In the face of such a severe pollution situation caused by disposable plastic products to the environment, each of us can no longer stay out of the way and sit idly by. Reducing the use of disposable plastic products is the bounden responsibility of each of us. For individuals, we bring reusable shopping bags, cups and cutlery when we go out; For merchants, the use of disposable appliances made of paper or biodegradable materials is promoted. Everyone should actively participate in garbage sorting so that plastic waste can be properly disposed of. Every small action can be a powerful force. In order to protect our earth home, in order to save those endangered creatures due to plastic pollution, let us work together to resolutely say "no" to disposable plastic pollution, protect our green home with practical actions, and return the earth a pure blue sky, clear blue water and fertile land!
