National policies to limit the use of plastic products

Home    National policies to limit the use of plastic products

Driven by the global wave of environmental protection, more and more countries are actively taking action to limit the use of plastic straws, then follow me to see what countries have done to restrict the use of plastic straws.

European Union:

Total ban: In 2019, the Council of the European Union passed the single-use plastic Products Directive, requiring member states to completely ban single-use plastic straws, cotton swabs, plastic plates and plastic cutlery and other products by 2021.

Recycling targets: The directive also stipulates that by 2025, the EU aims to achieve a 95% recycling rate for plastic bottles; By 2029, 90% of plastic bottles should be collected for recycling. By 2030, new plastic bottles should contain at least 30% recycled materials.

Implementation measures: Member States are required to develop national laws to implement the directive, such as France's introduction of a circular economy law in 2020, which includes a ban on all single-use plastic products by 2040 and a target of 100% plastic packaging recycling by 2025.

United States:

Local bans: Several states and cities in the United States have introduced plastic straw bans. For example, in July 2018, Seattle implemented a ban on plastic straws, and Washington, D.C., banned plastic straws in restaurants and other service establishments in January 2019. In addition, Miami Beach, Malibu, California and other cities have similar bans.

Related bill: The Get Rid of Plastic Pollution Act, introduced in 2020, aims to reduce single-use plastics nationwide, but is still under Senate review as of March 2021.

Other countries:

New Zealand: From July 1, 2024, shopping malls and supermarkets will be prohibited from providing or selling disposable plastic food bags, disposable plastic tableware and plastic straws, and prohibited businesses may be fined heavily.

The United Kingdom announced on October 1, 2023 that it will stop the supply and sale of single-use plastic products, including single-use plastic bowls, plates, trays, cutlery, balloon sticks, and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers.

Canada: On December 20, 2022, it began to ban the manufacture and import of single-use plastics, and it is expected to achieve zero plastic waste before 2030, covering shopping checkout bags, tableware, food service tableware, ring trays, mixing sticks and straws, etc., and the related sales ban will be implemented in December 2023.

South Korea: In November 2022, the one-year "plastic ban" transition period was ended, and the "disposable use restriction measures" were officially implemented, prohibiting businesses such as cafes, restaurants and convenience stores from using disposable products, otherwise they will face fines.

The UAE emirate of Dubai: The import and transaction of disposable plastic bags will be banned in Dubai from January 1, 2024, and the use of plastic straws will be banned from January 1, 2025.

The policy actions of these countries send a clear signal to the world: the era of plastic straws is gradually coming to an end. We have reason to believe that the future of the earth will be more green, sustainable development on the road!
